Bible Concordance - What is it?
A Bible Concordance is an alphabetical index of words used in the Holy Bible, showing contextual occurrences of each word throughout the Bible's 66 separate literary works. The classic exhaustive Bible Concordance for the classic English translation of the Bible (the 1611 King James Version) is the Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible.
Bible Concordance - Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible
The Strong's Bible Concordance is the culmination of at least 35 years of dedication by James Strong, LL.D., S.T.D., a professor of exegetical theology at Drew Theological Seminary. With the help of more than 100 colleagues, Strong first published the Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible in 1890. Since its completion more than a century ago, it has become the most widely used concordance for the King James Version, the most widely read Bible translation. The Strong's is nothing less than exhaustive, listing every Hebrew and Greek word used in the entire Bible (including "the," "if," "it," "and," "but," and "or"), listing every time each word occurs, and giving a short excerpt of the sentence in which each word is found. To compliment the exhaustive concordance, Strong's includes Hebrew and Greek dictionaries.
The most recent editions have improved upon the classic Strong's by adding hundreds of pages of new supplementary material, including "The Laws of the Bible," "Teaching and Illustrations of Christ," a "Universal Subject Guide to the Bible," and a "Harmony of the Gospels," without excluding any sections from the original Strong's. But perhaps the most useful improvement for the modern day scholar is the cross-referencing of the variant spellings of proper names from modern translations (which differ from the King James spellings of the same names). Strong's has made such an impact upon modern Bible study that many scholarly works, including the most recent editions of the classic "Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names" (Alfred Jones, 1856), are keyed to the numbering system employed by the Strong's Bible Concordance.
Bible Concordance - The Principle of Expositional Constancy
One of the most important uses for a Bible Concordance is the study of Bible structure and integration. The entire Bible (66 books written by 40 authors over a period of approximately 1,600 years) tells the story of the world's Redeemer. Every story, every genealogy, every number, every page, every detail speaks of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. One of the compelling evidences for the Divine authorship of the Bible is a principle known as the "Expositional Constancy." You can get a good understanding of what this means using an exhaustive Bible concordance. For example, using a concordance, take the term "Rock" or "Stone" and search for every usage of the word from Genesis 1 through Revelation 22. We discover that all uses of those words tie together, the climax being 1 Corinthians 10, where the Apostle Paul elaborates: "Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ" (1 Corinthians 10:1-4). We may never truly comprehend the depths of God's Word this side of heaven, but with a good Bible Concordance we can at least take our Bible study to a whole new level.
Bible Concordance - Other Scholarly Reference Resources
The Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible is by no means the only Bible Concordance available for the diligent Bible student. Other quality works include Nave's Topical Bible, Torrey's Topical Textbook, and The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. Take advantage of these wonderful resources and fulfill the Bible's edict to "study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15).

WHAT DO YOU THINK? - We have all sinned and deserve God's judgment. God, the Father, sent His only Son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him. Jesus, the creator and eternal Son of God, who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buried, and rose from the dead according to the Bible. If you truly believe and trust this in your heart, receiving Jesus alone as your Savior, declaring, "Jesus is Lord," you will be saved from judgment and spend eternity with God in heaven.
